Winter guard is the sport of indoor color guard. It is performed to prerecorded music inside of a gym combining of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. As a scholastic member of the Atlantic Indoor Association (AIA) and Winter Guard International (WGI), the members travel and participate in 4 competitions during the months of January-March on Saturdays.
•Members of the winter guard prepare for the season by attending 2 “camp” weekends at school in December and January. The choreographer comes and teaches the choreography and drill for the routine at this time.
•Rehearsals start in December and run through the end of March. They are on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4:00 – 7:00 PM either at Hanover HS or Kersey Creek Elementary.
•Competition locations this year are: Cumberland HS, Forest Park HS, Atlee HS, and championships at Mt Vernon HS.
•Hanover Winter Guard will be holding a spinning clinic November 15-16 and November 19-20 from 4:00-6:00PM. The clinic dates are to teach flag spinning and technique along with a bit of dance. Each day the skills are added upon. During these clinic days the students will be taught a routine for the auditions. Auditions will be on November 20th.
•Students who are auditioning are asked to meet in the band room by 4:00. All are asked to wear athletic or gym attire (no jeans). Please make sure to abide by dress code rules. Bring plenty of water!
•Once auditions are complete, an email will be sent out indicating the newest members of the Hanover Winter Guard.
